Getting Started
Once you have decide that you may be interested in joining Rainbow Lakes Volunteer Fire Department, below are some of the general steps to getting started:
So.. How do I get started?

Meet & Apply
- Contact the membership chairperson at membership@rlvfc.org.
- Arrange to attend an upcoming drill or meeting and see what it’s all about. Meet the members (we’re super nice!) and be sure to ask LOTS of questions.
- Fill out an application and some other paperwork.
- Complete a physical with the department’s designated medical provider, at NO COST TO YOU.
- Then submit your paperwork for approval.
Probationary Membership:
- Once approved, you become a Probationary member (until completing all required training).
- You’ll be issued Personal Protective Equipment (turnout gear) and other basic equipment.
- As a Probationary member you’re expected to attend as many meetings, drills, and emergency calls as possible, just like other members.




Training
- On-the-job training begins immediately – pay attention, learn from the senior firefighters and assist wherever you can – you’ll provide plenty of meaningful help right from the start, but you won’t be doing anything that requires formal training just yet.
- Complete your formal training, all of which is provided FREE OF CHARGE.
- Become CPR/First Aid certified.
- Take a few online courses (2-3 hours each).
- Pass Firefighter 1 and Hazardous Materials training at the fire academy.
- Offered at different times of the year and can be taken as a short and intensive 5 days a week program or 2 day a week program over a longer period of time.
Membership:
- Upon successful completion of all training you become a full member of the department.
- Junior firefighters become full members at the age of 18, assuming all training is complete.
- You’ll be fitted for your brand new personal turnout gear and department uniforms, all of which are provided at NO COST TO YOU.
- You’re now a fully equipped, fully trained, and fully qualified firefighter – You can now use your new super powers to make a difference in the lives of others!
