🧯 Fire Extinguishers 101: What Kind, Where to Keep Them, and How to Use Them
When a fire breaks out, seconds matter—and a properly placed, correctly used fire extinguisher can make all the difference. Whether it’s a small kitchen flare-up or a smoldering electrical outlet, knowing how to react could save your home, your belongings, and even your life.
At Rainbow Lakes Volunteer Fire Company, we believe prevention and preparation go hand-in-hand. Here’s everything you need to know to stay ready with the right fire extinguisher—before you ever need it.
🔥 The 5 Types of Fire Extinguishers (And Which You Need)
Not all fire extinguishers are created equal. Each type is designed for specific types of fires:
- Class A – For ordinary combustibles like wood, paper, cloth, and trash
- Class B – For flammable liquids such as gasoline, grease, and oil
- Class C – For electrical fires (wiring, appliances, circuit breakers)
- Class D – For combustible metals (typically found in industrial settings)
- Class K – For commercial kitchen fires involving cooking oils and fats
💡 Most homes should have a multi-purpose extinguisher labeled “ABC.” This type covers the most common household fire risks.
📍 Where to Keep Fire Extinguishers
The best fire extinguisher is the one you can reach when you need it. Here’s where you should place them:
- Kitchen – The most common location for home fires. Mount it near the exit, not right next to the stove (you want access even if the stove is on fire).
- Garage/Workshop – A common spot for flammable materials and power tools.
- Laundry Room – Dryers are a frequent source of home fires.
- Each Level of the Home – Especially if you live in a multi-story house.
- Vehicles – A compact extinguisher in your car can be a smart addition.
🔥 Mount extinguishers in visible, easily accessible locations—preferably near exits and away from high-risk fire zones.
🧠How to Use a Fire Extinguisher: The P.A.S.S. Method
When it’s time to act, remember P.A.S.S.:
- Pull the pin
- Aim low, at the base of the fire
- Squeeze the handle evenly
- Sweep side to side across the fire base
🔊 Before using an extinguisher, make sure everyone else is evacuating and someone has called 911. Even small fires can grow quickly.
⏳ When to Replace or Recharge Your Extinguisher
- Check the pressure gauge monthly. The needle should be in the green zone.
- Look for signs of wear, corrosion, or damage.
- Most extinguishers should be professionally inspected or replaced every 5–12 years, depending on the type.
- If you use an extinguisher—even partially—it must be recharged or replaced.
âś… Final Fire Extinguisher Tips
- Teach all capable family members how to use one.
- Don’t attempt to fight a fire if it’s spreading, you don’t know what’s burning, or you’re unsure of how to use the extinguisher.
- Always have an escape route behind you before you try to put out a fire.
